A Fun and Functional Bedroom Update
When my boys asked for a bedroom refresh, I wanted it to be a fun space – I also wanted it to be functional. Since they share a room, I wanted to ensure the design would grow with them.
Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of what I did! I transformed their space with simple DIY updates, decor that suits them, and practical solutions that make everyday life easier.
Step 1: Saying Goodbye to Old Wallpaper

My first step: Remove the old!
– Removing the blue and white striped peel-and-stick wallpaper that we originally put up when we moved in.
– I was amazed at how sturdy that Target wallpaper was! It clung to our textured walls like a champ and took some serious muscle to remove.
– The good news? It came off cleanly without damaging the walls – a major win! If you’re wondering whether peel-and-stick wallpaper is safe for textured walls, rest assured – it worked beautifully in our space.
-(And yes, it was way fun to pull the entire wall of wallpaper down 🤣.)
Step 2: Peel-and-stick perfection – times two!
(Because One Just Wasn’t Enough!)
Step 2: Up goes the new!
– I found TWO perfect patterns from Wall Blush’s Young & Rad Collection! Both designs have a fun, youthful vibe that will grow with them over time. (The lightning bolt pattern is called “Rad Society”; the Stereo pattern is called “With the Band”)
– The best part? Wall Blush customizes the wallpaper to fit your walls perfectly! No endless measuring or cutting – just order based on your wall dimensions, and each panel arrives pre-cut and labeled.
– If you’re intimidated by intricate designs (like the boom box pattern I chose), trust me – it’s easier than it looks! Put a Nike check on it and just do it, for real…once you get started, you’ll see how easy it is 😉.
– Pro Tip: Pay attention to the panels’ labels and numbers. Keep them in order from left to right.
– Pro Tip: The roll might be longer than your wall. Hang the entire panel. Then cut the excess off the bottom. You can see the extra at the bottom of the panels in my pics below.

Step 3: Tackling the Trickier Areas
Step 3: Work Around the Tricky Areas
– This was my first time working around doors and windows with wallpaper, and I’ll admit – I was nervous. But to my surprise, it was much easier than I expected!
– The window wall took a little extra patience, but the end result was totally worth it. My razor blade and smoothing tool were my best friends during this part. I just took my time and piled on the patience. Before I knew it, I was finished!
– Pro Tip: Keep smoothing it out…often times, bubbles will smooth themselves out around those tricky spots if you keep working them toward the edges.
– Pro Tip: I used leftover wallpaper to cover outlets, which helps them blend perfectly into the room’s design.

Step 4: Adding Comfort and Organization
Once the wallpaper was up, it was time to pull everything together. Here are some tried-and-true favorites I just couldn’t part with. I also added a couple of new things:
Zipper Bedding – My absolute favorite! We LOVE our Beddys, y’all. Their bedding literally zips right up, making mornings so much smoother for us all. They come in tons of colors/designs!
New Grid Pattern Comforters – These comforters are lightweight but enough to keep them warm if they need them, and a perfect, subtle addition of a neutral pattern to balance the room!
Under-Bed Organizers – We use zipper storage bins to keep stuffed animals corralled while still being easy for the kids to access. We also swapped out curtains and added a new blanket for the end of each bed. Some things just work too well to replace!
New Rug! – How good is that new rug y’all?! I used carpet tape to keep the edges down so no one trips and so their closet door doesn’t pull the edges up!
The pic below shows ALL the things, and I think it all came together SO well! Shop the whole room here!

Step 5: Last and Final Step!
If this industrial-inspired wall-mounted shelf looks familiar, it’s because it is! We have the same one in our playroom. I knew a smaller version would be perfect for the boy’s room! This wall was a bit of a cluttered mess before. It ended up being the catch-all. Now it’s SO much better!
The boys are so excited to have some of their LEGO projects in their room now. They also have their baseball cards and other fun things with plenty of space to show them off. I’m seriously so happy with how it turned out!
And…I know what you’re thinking…The top level of the shelf’s design includes a lip at the front. It prevents a kiddo from pulling off the top board!

This project was SO MUCH fun, y’all!! It seriously turned out better than I even thought it would! From the bold wallpaper designs to the thoughtful storage solutions, everything came together perfectly. The boys are obsessed with their new room – and honestly, I am, too.
It’s stylish, functional, and a space they can enjoy for years to come. If you’re thinking about giving your kids’ room a makeover (or any room for that matter), I highly recommend checking out Wall Blush’s Young & Rad collection. Now the question is…which room/project is next?!
Love yall bigger than Texas,
XOXO – Katie
