5 Tips for Saving Money on Groceries

My sweet little fam and I went on our weekly trip to the grocery store today and y’all, I’m not kidding when I say the $$ just adds up SO quickly! I consider myself pretty savvy when it comes to saving money (ok, fine I had a coupon stock pile at one point in my life) at the grocery store and we still spend over $100 on groceries a week! But I can’t imagine how much we would spend if I didn’t try and save money here and there. Confession time, sometimes while we are in the check out line paying I look at what the people are putting on the belt behind me and I just want to jump out of my skin and shout “there’s a coupon for that!” But hello crazy lady… that would embarrass the husband. Ha! So, even if you don’t want to jump in feet first, here are 5 tips from the screaming crazy lady trapped inside me on how to save money in the grocery store!
Coupons:

I know, I know, you don’t want to carry around an accordion of organized tiny slips of paper, so don’t! Major grocers like Kroger and Target have online apps that allow you to use digital coupons (hello convenient!). Kroger will even let you use them on your Click List online order of groceries.
If you are going to buy the newspaper and clip coupons, I recommend buying two papers so that you can have 2 of every coupon. You can also print coupons online at sites like coupons.com and even target.com has manufacturers coupons and store specific coupons.
One of my favorite things to do while grocery shopping is be the “coupon fairy.” If I decide I don’t want a coupon or an item I leave it on that item for someone else to use. Why not help someone else out?!
The Krazy Coupon Lady:
This page ROCKS and so do the ladies that run it! Absolute best part? They do most of the work for you! They use the weekly ads and match coupons available so that you aren’t digging around trying to find the deals. Their page is store specific and even gives you best scenarios that you too can do! Bonus…their deals aren’t just for the grocery store. You can follow them on Facebook too!
Ibotta:
Whoever named this app is a genius, I bought-a! Makes me giggle. Anyways! Ibotta is a rebate app that at first I shied away from but now that I understand it, it’s kinda fab. How it works: make a list of your fav stores (CVS, Target, Walmart, Walgreens, Amazon.. you name it). It’ll show you items that you can get cash back on. Click on the item you plan on purchasing and add it to your offers. Once you purchase the item, scan the receipt using the app, and let the app do the work! It’ll tell you what items are matching on their app and the receipt and keep a running count of your earned money. Once you earn $20 you can cash out your money for cash or a gift card to a store of your choice.
Give it a try! Sometimes there are rebates for $0.25 just for buying a grocery item! Every penny counts!

Attention all Target Shoppers:
If you are an avid Target addict like I am, and you don’t already have the Target Cartwheel app, then you must be insane in the membrane. I’ve saved $967.50 since using cartwheel and they’ve added a new feature called Red (not the credit card) that works similar to a rebate system for you to earn 1% back when you shop and scan the app.
The glorious thing about cartwheel is that you can use it and a coupon on the same item. For example, you’re buying some bathroom cleaner and it’s on cartwheel for 15% off. You find a coupon for $1.50 off 1 cleaning product. You can use them both at the same time and save twice!
Walmart also has their savings catcher app that is very similar you could use if you’re a Walmart shopper!
Online Orders:
Kroger, Walmart, Market Street and now Target all offer online ordering for groceries. For a mom with littles, this option is like winning the grocery store lottery. I save money on groceries simply by not going in the store and dealing with the “I need this…” from a three year old. Y’all have to try this if you haven’t. You buy online, choose your pick up time, show up, and they load your car for you. For serious.

With all that being said, you don’t have to do all 5 of my tips to save money. Start small and work your way up because like I said earlier… every penny counts. You don’t have to have a stock pile of 89 shaving creams and 45 deodorants to save money. But it’s easy to save here and there and when you purchase a pair of $198 Tory Burch sandals you can remind your husband that you saved $1.70 at the grocery store!
Happy shopping and saving ladies!
