Master Closet Renovation

I’ve always dreamed of having one of those Carrie Bradshaw style closets. You know the ones that sparkle, greet you, and have revolving racks like Cher’s from clueless?! So when the husband asked what my next DIY wishlist project would be, naturally I blurted a new master closet. We have a laundry list of DIY projects on our list but I knew a closet renovation wouldn’t take long and wouldn’t break the bank. So for Christmas our gift to each other was a new renovated master closet.

Here’s the best before picture I have on my phone. The shelves were all coming off the wall, the carpet was well old, and it just wasn’t giving me heart eyes. There was a ton of wasted space and I knew it could be something fabulous with a little work!

Step 1: Design! We designed the closet on Ikea’s website. They have an amazingly easy user friendly design option where you put in your room measurements and create! You build your closet design using their actual products, get measurements for the products you build, and add it all directly to your cart when you are finished. You also get a print out of each section so you can see exactly what parts you designed with and where each drawer/shelf fits on that unit. It’s genius and I highly encourage it!

Step 2:Take it all out and donate at least 6 bags of clothes. We needed to clean out what we had so this was motivation. Not to mention having your clothes all over the house is a great motivator to get the project finished.

Step 3: Demo out the shelfs, rods, and carpet.

Step 4: Take out the carpet and replace flooring. We found the Water Resistant 12mm Montrose Oak 12 mm T x 7-1/2 in. Wide x 50-2/3 in. Length Laminate Flooring at Home Depot. I wanted something a little different but wasn’t totally sure until I saw it in the store. Flooring linked HERE. This was a husband father in law job while I watched the kiddos.

Step 5: Inserts. We went with the PAX wardrobe frames from IKEA. They come in two different heights, multiple colors, three different lengths, and two different depths. When you design your closet, you’ll see all the options for the frames. We used trays, drawers, glass front drawers, rods, and all three of the widths to create our custom look. Our closet design is a 29 inch-39 inch-19 inch- 39 inch-29 inch on both walls for a symmetrical look. I taped the print outs from the IKEA website inside each frame so we knew what was going in each.

*Ideally you’d put the wallpaper up before you build your units but we didn’t have it in so we built the units and just slide them out of the way to do the wallpaper.*

Step 6: Wallpaper!!!! Eek! We used WunderWall Murals for the wallpaper because their products are gorgeous and so easy to install. I could go on for hours about WunderWall wallpapers. This is the same company we used for the wallpaper in the laundry room. We used their Aztec Boho pattern.

WunderWall thinks of every step of the installation process and how they can make it as effortless as possible for their customers. With your wallpaper you’ll receive a step by step guide with instructions image and tips, along with a spatchula to smooth out your wallpaper as you work.

SIMPLY10 is my discount code at WunderWall if you’re looking to spruce up a space. Wallpaper makes a huge transformation!

Step 7: So now we have new floors, units built, wallpaper installed… the hubs mounted each shelf to the wall while I worked to plug the 192837129 holes in each unit.

Step 8: Finishing touches! I changed out the light fixture because I strongly disliked the fluorescent metal one that was in there. I’ve seen the Sputnik Chandeliers everywhere but didn’t want to spend over $100 on a light that goes in a closet (silly I know) so when I found this one HERE I was pumped! All black, 8 bulbs, under $50.. Add to cart and check out without even telling the husband! I also added a sheepskin rug to be the cherry on top! I’m still undecided about a mirror for the back wall but it’s a great spot for one to go!

In a nutshell…
– Use the IKEA Design page to design your dream closet
– Use WunderWall Mural’s peel and stick wallpaper to transform any and all the spaces SIMPLY10 discount code
– Go for it! Dream it and do it!

I LOVE my new master closet and am SO happy we did this space. We walk in this room every single day and to see our finished product is just an incredible feeling.
