How To Make a Simple Balloon Garland

We’ve all seen the decoration impact that a balloon garland can have for a party or event. Let me teach you how to make a simple balloon garland in under an hour! Fun Fact: in college I worked for an apartment complex and had to make “curb swag” so I’ve done this a time or two…

  1. Buy a balloon garland kit (I typically find mine on Amazon)
  2. You’ll need an air pump. HERE is mine.
  3. You need thick string, twine, or you can even use tulle.

Here we go!
Start by blowing up all of your balloons. You can tie them individually or in pairs. *Tip when blowing up your balloons make them round like a ball. Do not over fill them.

After all of your balloons are blown up you are going to create clusters of either 3 or 4 balloons depending on how you tied them. If you tied them individually make a cluster of 3, if you tied 2 together make clusters of 4. To make the clusters hold the ends/knots of the balloons together and start braiding the balloons over each other. The ends/knots will all become one all twisted together. I typically braid them until the knot is about 1/2 an inch long.

*If you are trying to make an alternating swirling color pattern be intentional about the colors in your clusters. But the one I am making is just random colors everywhere

Next, grab your tulle/string/jute whatever you are using to hang your garland. Pull out about 2 feet so that you have a tail to hang your garland. At about 2 feet, grab your first cluster of balloons and wrap the other end of the string around the balloons pressing it into where the braided knot is. This will secure the balloons to the string. Once you have your first balloons cluster secured to your string, grab your second cluster. Place your second cluster on top of your first cluster and wrap the string around balloons.

You’ll repeat adding clusters to your string and wrapping the string until you have no more clusters!

Cut your string at the end so that you have a second tail of string to hang your garland. And that’s it! You’ve made a balloon garland!

You can always get fancy by alternating colors of balloons or creating a swirling candy cane affect with the balloon colors but this happens when you make your clusters.

Want to add embellishments to your garland? Using the smaller/larger balloons you can add clusters to your balloons by wrapping a rubber band around the cluster and adding it to a single balloon already on the garland. You can also add in flowers/stems or foil balloons using glue dots.

Get creative and have so much fun!!
